FAQs
Neighboring Rights (also known as "related rights") are distinct intellectual property rights that compensate performers (such as recording artists, session musicians, and vocalists) and record labels/master owners for the public performance and broadcast of their sound recordings.
This includes plays on radio, TV, in public venues (like clubs, shops, and restaurants), and certain digital transmissions (e.g., non-interactive webcasts).
These are the payments collected from various sources (broadcasters, venues, digital services) by collection societies worldwide, which are then distributed to performers and record labels/master owners as compensation for the use of their sound recordings.
They represent an additional revenue stream beyond sales, publishing, or mechanical royalties.
Generally, music performers (featured artists, session musicians, backing vocalists), recording artists, producers, record labels, and master owners are eligible to receive Neighboring Rights royalties.
Essentially, anyone who has contributed to or owns the sound recording is a potential beneficiary.
Managing neighboring rights across multiple countries and societies is complex and time-consuming. 1710Media ensures accurate registration, tracking, royalty collection, and payments, maximizing your earnings while saving you the hassle.
We are in direct contact with the main CMOs around the world, this allows us great coverage of your rights. 1710Media frees you from any administrative burden by taking care of all registrations, conflict management, and claiming, to make sure your income is collected to the fullest.
Bear in mind that all CMOs have their own schedule and rules, however, a retroactive collection can be possible depending on the national legislation in each country. We'll fully collect your rights wherever possible.
Each CMO collects the neighboring rights in its territory and distributes them to its members. As mentioned, they all have their own schedule and rules (frequency and the number of payments for example). Once 1710Media gets the payment from CMOs, we redistribute them to you quarterly.
Neighboring Rights royalties are collected globally from a vast array of sources, including national radio stations, television broadcasters, public venues, bars, clubs, shops, and various digital streaming and broadcasting platforms.
1710Media's global network, with direct affiliations with over 65 collection societies across the globe, ensures we can register and claim royalties from virtually every territory where neighboring rights are recognized, ensuring your earnings are maximized worldwide.

Yes. We actively pursue retroactive royalty claims where applicable, provided your recordings and performer credits are properly documented and eligible within the statutes of the relevant territories.
No. You retain 100% ownership of your master recordings. Our role is to manage, collect, and distribute royalties on your behalf, not to own your content.
Neighboring Rights pertain to the sound recording and compensate performers (vocalists, musicians) and record labels/master owners for the public performance and broadcast of that recording.
Publishing Rights pertain to the underlying musical composition (the song itself: melody, lyrics, harmony) and compensate songwriters and composers.
Both are crucial income streams in the music industry, but they compensate different rights holders for different uses of the music.
Yes, absolutely. Neighboring Rights are separate from publishing rights. Your music publisher typically deals with the songwriting and composition side of your music (e.g., sheet music, lyrics, composition synchronization). Neighboring rights deal with the sound recording itself. Therefore, you can, and often should, have a separate administrator for your neighboring rights.
We charge a one-time signup fee of ₦50,000 (naira) for solo artists and ₦150,000 (naira) for record labels. After that, you’ll receive quarterly payouts, retaining 90% of all royalties collected on your behalf.
We provide detailed, in-depth quarterly statements and process your royalty payouts quarterly, ensuring consistent and transparent payments.
